Luxurious sheets are your first choice when it comes to good night sleep. One is lucky if he has an ultra soft cotton sheet to collapse on after a hectic day. You can find a good variety of cotton sheets in the market which is more appealing than ordinary cotton sheets. When you will decide to buy good quality cotton sheets, you will notice that different grades of cotton are available. Buying a good bed sheet is often confronted with a maze of options. You will come across so many options that learning to decipher these terms will need so many efforts.
Pima and Egyptian are two such examples of cotton and are also known as the oldest varieties known. The two are so similar that it is not easy to identify the difference by slightly feeling them alone.
Basically, there are three factors to choose which helps you in determining the quality and feel of the sheet. First of all, the fiber it is made of, secondly the method of weaving the fabric and at last its thread count.
Egyptian and Pima both are referred as extra-long staple cotton. Extra-long staple means that the natural fibers of the plant are of extra-ordinary length. Both of the fabrics share a number of common features such as their luxuriously soft fabric. Both are resistant to fraying, tearing, pilling, wrinkling and fading. With all of these premium similar characteristics, the difference lies in the origin of both the cotton fibers.
Pima comes from United States (California and Arizoana) while Egyptian thrives from the hot, arid and dry climate of Egypt. It is also grown in various parts of China and India. Every fabric grown in Egypt is Egyptian but that does not guarantee its superior quality.
Pima yields a very soft weave and is often known as ‘Supima’ as a trademark of Supima Association. Its superior quality verified by the association. On the contrary, the yield of Egyptian cotton is soft as well as supple. If anyhow you manage to get the real thing, it will be of very good quality. Statistics show that more than 89% of cotton sold as Egyptian or Pima is not original at all.
Pima cotton is highly consistent as compared to averagely consistent Egyptian cotton. Both Egyptian and Pima cotton are highly expensive again if you get the original thing. But Egyptian sheets are much pricier than Pima for being original and of superior quality though it is harder to justify the high price of sheet by touching alone.
Americans have created the brand name Supima to identify fine quality Pima whilst original Egyptians sheets are sold under the brand name Giza.
While you go through all these factors to choose the best sheet for you, your personal choice and priority still holds the top position. When compared to normal cotton sheets, both Pima and Egyptian observe stark difference and the difference becomes more apparent after several washes. Both the sheets are so luxurious that surprisingly many products claim to contain them.
